About the House

Located on the campus of The University of South, just steps away from the Sewanee Village, this beautiful historic home with a charming, rambling feel is perfect for family reunions, vacation getaways, parent visits and other University events. The full house offers 4.5 bedrooms and 3 full baths + 2 half baths. The house is complete with a fully stocked kitchen and a dining room table that comfortably seats 10 people. The expansive front porch is hidden behind large hemlocks that give privacy but don’t obstruct the ability to watch the local action on University Avenue. Six rocking chairs and a porch swing contribute to making this the ideal spot to take in the Sewanee mountain air. Amenities include wireless Internet, Digital TV and a blue tooth stereo system..

Built in 1871, this home is full of history. It’s rumored that John Wilkes Booth, who was reportedly captured and killed after assassinating President Lincoln, actually survived, married a Sewanee woman and lived in this very house.

Generations of Sewanee families were raised here (including that of a local priest and the original owner of Taylor's Mercantile), and countless undergrads have rented the cottage though the years. The house is recognized as The Brooks House” on the Sewanee historic register.

Affectionately named "The Domain,” the University of the South campus is located on top of Monteagle Mountain. The area offers miles of trails for hiking and biking.  (We provide 2 bikes, and additional bikes can be rented at the nearby Woody’s Bike Shop). The Sewanee Village is home to shops and eateries. Shop at the Lemon Fair or Taylor’s, eat at Shenanigans or the Tavern, and grab a coffee or ice cream cone at the Blue Chair. Main campus is a two-minute walk and even shorter bike ride in the opposite direction.
