EXPLORE

Wander around the 13,000 acre domain and stop in the beautiful center of campus crafted from the local sandstone and modeled after Oxford in England. All Saints’ Chapel is a beautiful gothic cathedral with symbolic stained glass windows and beautiful arches. (Note: Sewanee tradition states that any undergrad who steps on the seal at the church’s entryway will not graduate.) Close by you will find the University Bookstore with a local writer’s section as well as University memorabilia and college gear. The Sewanee Village shops and restaurants are a short walk down to the end of University Avenue. The Lemon Fair and Taylor’s Merchantile are two not to miss (The Taylors were one of the original owners of The 1871 House).

RECREATE

The campus consists of 13,000 acres spread across The Domain There are plenty of outdoor options such as hiking the 20-mile Perimeter Trail or a leisurely stroll through Abbo’s Alley. Take your bike to the Fire Trails for some mountain biking or hit the Mountain Goat trail and head to Mooney’s for some refreshments. The Fowler Center is a great rainy day activity with a climbing wall and indoor track. The Sewanee Golf Course is a beautiful 9 hole local course that will surprise you every time with the view of the bluff from hole number three.

EAT

The newest dining experience in Sewanee is Octopi, a wood fired pizza restaurant housed in an old dry-cleaning facility. Keg wine on tap and the copper oven make for a cozy bar and great place to belly up for dinner. The Blue Chair Café and Tavern is a great place for a morning lattes or Jackalope in the evenings it offers a full breakfast menu + a grill menu in the evenings. The Sewanee Inn’s eighteen58 restaurant has a great breakfast/brunch and the Sewanee Inn’s Sunday brunch is great for Mother’s day or other special events.  McClurg student dining hall is a favorite of our kids. Walking distance from the house this dining option has cafeteria fare that is elevated by the University farm ingredients and locally sourced produce and meat. Mooney’s Market/Crecent Cafe has some delicious vegetarian lunch options.

SIP

Shenanigans is the local bar and the best place to sip a beer and sit on the porch. Occasionally they have live music and always offer some beautiful local artwork in the back gallery. The Tavern is attached to the Blue Chair restaurant. In addition to a great grill menu and beer they have Jackalope brews on tap and sports on the TV. (The couple who owns the Blue Chair are part-owners of the Nashville-based brewery, as well.) The porch is a favorite student and alum hangout right across from Angel Park. The Shakerag, the bar at the Sewanee Inn serves made from scratch cocktails, great wines and a bar menu that will keep you happy while you visit with locals in the cozy bar or sit on the back porch overlooking the beautiful golf course.
